My Opinions on the Israel/Gaza Situation, Trans Rights, and Abortion…

…are not shared online.

When he was a teenager, my grandfather probably had opinions on Israel, abortion and who knows what else. And he may well have shared them with other people. And if he did, I doubt there is any record of it.

When he was a teenager, my father probably had opinions on Israel, abortion and who knows what else. And he may well have shared them with other people. And if he did, I doubt there is any record of it.

They both grew up in pre-social media ages.

As a teenager today I need to be aware what I share. A couple of years ago a kid had his five minutes of fame for being sent home from school for wearing a T-shirt that said there were only 2 genders. Whether you agree with him or not, I hope you realize how weird it was for a kid to own such a T-shirt, to even want to have such a T-shirt. My guess is that his dad had strong views about it and the boy was parroting him. I doubt either of them have any academic background to drive their views or have done any real research. They just KNEW they were correct.

A decade or two from now, that kid will be grown up. He may still hold his views on gender identity, he may have changed them. But a prospective employer, or girlfriend, or friend can google his name and find he was the 2 Gender T-shirt kid. Depending upon opinions in the future, that may come back to haunt him, even if only in making that prospective employer decide that he might be too much of a troublemaker to risk hiring.

I’m sure if I went back far enough I will find I have ancestors who were against inter-race marriages, or inter-faith marriages, or women having the right to vote. Or rather, I probably wouldn’t. They probably didn’t feel the need to record their views for posterity.

When I his the publish button, I risk having the views I express here outlast me. Two hundred years from now the aliens who find the ruins of human civilization may read these words (sorry, aliens, it’s not the best record of humanity!!!). I should be careful what I post (but too often am not – she gave herself very good advice, but very rarely followed it).

At least that’s my opinion.

Really? F**k. I do many things – freak out, get worked up, melt down. But not wisdom.

Does this mean I’m growing up and maturing???

      LOL, thanks for the comment!!!

LOL! There was definitely a lot of wisdom in your conclusions. You have a good head on your shoulders. 🙂

I don’t think aliens will read what we write, but AI and robots will. So whatever we write, will likely be incorporated into a global intelligence that will track individual opinions. So it’s very wise to learn from the mistakes of others.

I will give them many, many mistakes to learn from.

      I wish I had!

I’d say it’s good to make many teachable moments when young, but social media makes such moments last much too long. No statute of limitations online 😦

Understandably social media has had an affect on job opportunities and even dating, so anyone should definitely be careful what they post online. It will sometimes come back to haunt you. Wise of you not to discuss these topics online, or possibly with certain people even in your life. They are sensitive topics and one persons views may not match your own. I try to keep an open mind on people’s views, but not everyone is like that lol

Very good observation about the generations and social media. But don’t think our older generations didn’t share our opinions. We did but like you say the written and video evidence isn’t there. I have no problem owning my past. When I managed in the past I would tell people that you have a social life, a personal life and a professional life. Try not to let them overlap but when they do communicate. It isn’t for me to judge a persons social or personal choices as a boss unless they interfere with the job or others doing their jobs.
